IoT Solar Powered Toilet Roll Dispensor
Jamtech IoT have designed a solar powered smart toilet roll holder to demonstrate their internet-of-things (IoT) technology capability. This example demonstrates how IoT can be of benefit using a widely recognised everyday object.
- Better management of human resources
- Reduction in labor costs
- Product theft detection
- Usage history (i.e. use data patterns to better manage HR)
- Temperature information
- Solar power means no battery maintenance
How does it work?
Inside the prototype dispenser is a sensing arm which changes angle as the roll diameter reduces due to use.
Electronics in the dispenser periodically reports the level of remaining consumable (toilet roll) by wireless to a nearby Gateway. The Gateway, which can be servicing a number of other dispensers, forwards the information to a server. The information can then be viewed by in a browser.
What’s important here is the ability to estimate when action needs to be taken i.e when to replace the toilet roll.
Parameters other than roll level may also be recorded. The chart below shows battery voltage, PV voltage and RSSI.
Can it send an email?
Yes, in essence. This would be done by the server which would continually analyse dispenser data and generate an email message for those units that need servicing.
Where else can this technology be used?
There are a vast number of uses for this technology.
- Process and control
- Environmental monitoring
- Building service management
- Roof monitoring
- Janitor services
